The Liberty Cannon Award

The Liberty Cannon Award

The Liberty Cannon Award began as a community outreach, training and recruiting effort on behalf of our company. We sought to find students who might be interested in metalworking through a tie-in with the Explorer Program at Wheeling High School. We had been supporting the school with plant tours, guest speakers, discussions and projects when one particular idea caught our attention: the manufacture of a 10x reduction of the original Liberty Cannon used by the colonial army in the war of American Independence.

The Liberty Cannon has caught on with aerospace clients and friends, not to mention our employees and local community. When we started this program (on a suggestion from Mr. Roger Sustar of Fredon Corporation) we never dreamed it would gain a life of its own. Just to see it up close is an inspiration! It takes many sessions to fabricate an exact replica of the original cannon, designed in the 18th century.

A Special Thanks
to Mr. Roger J. Sustar

Mr. Sustar is President of Fredon Corporation in Mentor, Ohio. He's been helping students build Liberty Cannons since 1995 when he first suggested that we join him in this special educational effort on behalf of the metal working industry. Thank you Roger for all of your encouragement and help!

The prospect of making this unique and highly challenging sculpture could not have generated more enthusiasm. We opened our shop to the students and provided some expertise and equipment. Meetings, tours and parent nights were organized. Along with a lot of help from our Supervisors and Apprentices, including hands-on instruction and CAD/CAM technology, the students carefully guided each part through the manufacturing and finishing steps to a beautiful cannon made of Brass, Aluminum and Stainless Steel.

Along with our student organization, we have pledged to award the Liberty Cannon to worthy causes and people. In some cases, it has been to a special employee at Numerical Precision Inc. At other times we have elected to give this award to particular individuals in the aerospace industry who have made a lasting contribution to their field of national importance.

As a small organization we're delighted to giving something back to people who have made a difference. The Liberty Cannon itself is a fitting symbol of patriotism, worthy of the fundamental mission behind the programs in which we are so proud to work.

How exciting it is to share in teaching new things to eager minds. Especially, when intricate and detailed manufacturing is the core curriculum.
